WHO STILL QUALIFIES
In most cases, Law 74/2025 cut the line of descent after the grandparent. This guide shows where your line stands, which documents to gather and which path to take: the consulate or Italy.

What changed in March 2025
Decree-Law 36/2025, converted into Law 74/2025, stopped automatically recognizing people born outside Italy who hold another citizenship. The exceptions remain: a father, mother, grandfather or grandmother with Italian citizenship only, and applications filed by March 27, 2025.
What we know
- Great-grandchildren, as a rule, are no longer recognized
- Applications filed by March 27, 2025 follow the previous rule
- Children or grandchildren of an Italian-only citizen still qualify
What we don’t know yet
- How the courts will rule on challenges to the law
- How each consulate will organize its queue from now on
- Whether there will be further changes for minor children (Law 199/2025)
